Did you know that Super Glue was accidentally invented during World War II? In an attempt to find a way to make clear mounts for machine guns, scientists experimented with different chemicals known as cyanoacrylates, but abandoned the project because the chemical stuck to everything.
In 1951, Dr. Harry Coover, thinks that these super-sticky cyanoacrylates could be used to create an extremely strong adhesive product, which he calls “Super Glue”. Since 1958 Super Glue has been sold as a commercial product for home and industrial use. Nowadays, Super Glue is present in every household and office.
What is Super Glue? Super glue is based on a resin called cyanoacrylate that hardens in contact with moisture in the air. Thus, Super glue instantly and easily glues various objects from different materials: plastic, rubber, metal, wood, ceramic, etc. on small surfaces. In the absence of moisture in the atmosphere, Super glue will not dry or stick. That’s why the glue that sticks to almost anything in seconds doesn’t stick to the inside walls of the package. The presence of moisture leads to the strengthening of the bonds between the cyanoacrylate molecules, which soon turn into a kind of hard plastic.
